I’m probably gonna get a lot of heat for this post but oh well! I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at a higher level text I was reading to my fifth graders the other day. Not only was it about as engaging as a wet piece of cardboard, there were words I had trouble pronouncing! They were to analyze the text and compose a written composition to an extensive prompt. It was tough! So the opinions I have about the curriculum sometimes not being age-appropriate, it had me thinking about how the Sex Ed curriculum hasn’t changed in probably… EVER!!! If my 16-year-old still thinks that you can get pregnant from a toilet seat, then I think we have some gaps-🤦🏼♀️
As a parent, I know it’s my responsibility to give the talk to my children. If you happen to ask either one of them about these talks I’m sure they would blush and say they learned probably more than they needed to at the time. In fact, I was in total shock when my daughter asked if you could get pregnant from a toilet seat because not only did I tell her that sperm had to swim up the fallopian tubes, towards the egg, once ejaculated from the man’s penis during intercourse, she should know that sperm, like men, aren’t going to put in much more effort than they have to. They’re not going to hang out on a toilet seat and wait for an extended amount of time before they jump to it and do all that swimming. They’re not going to do more work than they need to.
Here are my thoughts on teaching sex ed…they have the world at their fingertips with technology! This means they have an endless amount of incorrect information accessible to them at all times. While I know abstinence is the best form of birth control, the reality is, if they want to do it, then they are going to find a way to do it. So my job is about teaching my son and daughter to be responsible. To be responsible, they need to know their body. They NEED to know about protection. They NEED to know about consent.
I take this responsibility of being a mother very seriously especially when we are now living in a world where women’s reproductive rights are being stripped by our government. No, this is not an open invitation to hear your political views, so you can take that shit somewhere else!
I know there are many conflicting thoughts about teens and when and if they should have Sex Ed class in public schools. I have been in heated discussions about it with some of my best friends. Just the word sex can put parents and lawmakers into a tailspin. I get it, but sex education isn’t an instructional course, it’s body awareness. It’s about teaching hormonal raging teens about their body. It’s teaching them that what they are going through is normal, not dirty, not perverse. And honestly, I’m tired of hearing about how teenagers today are over sexualized, overstimulated, and how they’ve changed, compared to the past. I have two teenagers, and they are not any different than I was at their age, other than society and technology has changed. My children have the same curiosity and questions I had at their age. Maybe it’s happening a little sooner? But WE are the ones pumping our foods full of hormones and preservatives so we should expect it to happen sooner. If I’m honest, I don’t believe it’s really happening a lot sooner compared to where I was at their age, over 30 years ago. We just didn’t talk about it. How nice it is that I talk about it with my kids.
I’m not going to get into statistics or data, but my state is one that makes it optional…doesn’t cover consent (HOLY HELL! Are you serious?!?!?) and we are 3rd in teen pregnancies. May not be hitting the leaderboard in education, but we’re topping the charts with teen pregnancies. Is there a problem with that? I guess that’s up to you to decide. In this mom’s opinion, it’s not good enough.
Unquestionably consider that that you said.
Your favourite justification appeared to be on the net the easiest thing to consider of.
I say to you, I definitely get irked while other folks consider issues that they plainly do not realize about.
You controlled to hit the nail upon the top and also
defined out the entire thing without having side-effects , people can take a signal.
Will probably be again to get more. Thanks
